At present, all of our UHF RFID sensors are passive. However, Axzon will soon launch the next generation of sensors, a semi-active data logger. Semi-active means that the data logger has a battery that will last about one month and can record data when a UHF RFID signal is not present. This will be a great product for the cold chain where the data logger can record the temperature of an item through its entire delivery cycle, and provide that history by simply using an RFID reader to interrogate the data record.
Our family of passive sensors is designed to be extremely power efficient, which allows them to run the sensing circuits using the power harvested from the reader’s RF signal.
However, this means that a reader must be in close proximity at all times and must probe the sensor to take a measurement. For applications that require the sensor to regularly make measurements without having a reader nearby, the sensor would need to be battery-backed. We are currently designing a sensor that is battery-backed, allowing it to perform as usual in passive mode while using the battery to make periodic measurements and store them in memory.
